In early October we sent out some e-mails to our leaders in Washington, telling them about Kyra's remarkable story, and some of the struggles we have encoutered through it all with regards to health insurance.  Senators Daniel Akaka and Daniel Inouye responded with heartfelt letters for Kyra in her recovery.  Congressman Neil Abercrombie wrote this email to us:

Dear Mr. Furukawa:

Thank you for contacting me to share with me your daughter's story and to express your support for protecting children's health care. I appreciate hearing from you on this matter.

As you may know, in the House health reform bill, H.R. 3962, essential services for children are required in all insurance plans in the national health exchange. Benefits such as well baby and well child care, dental care, vision, and hearing services, equipment, and supplies, at least for children under 21 years of age, will be covered by insurance plans. Furthermore, health reform will help control costs for families. It will ensure preventive care is free for all insured Americans, annual and lifetime limits on benefits are eliminated, and to prevent bankruptcies, a new cap will be set on what families pay out of pocket annually for health care.

I will be monitoring the various health reform bills to ensure that children's health care is promoted and protected. Again, mahalo for sharing your views on this matter. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of further assistance.

Neil Abercrombie

Member of Congress

Mahalo again for contacting me. As your Representative in the United States Congress, it is a privilege and an honor to serve you.
